Located in the centre of the town, the church of Santa Catalina dates from the 15th century, although it was built on top of an old Gothic church from the end of the 13th century.
The church, made of plastered and blanched masonry, has granite elements in the corners, doorways, windows and arches.
It has a single nave divided into five sections by pointed arches resting on pillars. Attached to these are four chapels of different periods and varied characteristics, which are accessed through semicircular arches and closed by wrought iron grilles.
SIDE CHAPELS
GINES MARTINEZ CHAPEL: (2nd chapel on the left)
The early church chapel. This chapel corresponds to the tomb of the priest Ginés Martínez, who paid the construction of his funeral chapel in 1560.
We can also see the mausoleum of an illustrious character of the town, Don José María Claros y Jarillo (descendant of Ginés Martínez). He was a congressman in the Parliament.
Originally,in this chapel would be located the panel paintings of Luis de Morales.
In this chapel you can see the images of San Francisco de Asís and San Benito and of the Sacred Heart.
BENITO BOZA'S CHAPEL. (1st Chapel on the left)
It's the same as the one before. The images that can be seen in this chapel are that of Saint Anthony, Saint Peter with the keys to the kingdom of heaven (Jesus gave them to Saint Peter as a symbol of his supremacy over the other disciples and apostles), the Virgin of Carmen and a painting of the Perpetuo Socorro.
CHAPEL OF JUAN MARQUEZ MARTÍNEZ. (2nd Chapel on the right)
Called Sancturary Chapel is the funeral chapel of the priest Juan Márquez Martínez, built around 1570. For a time and until the construction of the altar of the main chapel in 1641, was in this chapel the image of Santa Catalina so it was given its name at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
In the tabernacle chapel we can see the images of the Virgin of the Rosary, St. Isidro and St. Joseph.
A mausoleum can also be seen on the side of the epistle. It belongs to the parents and one of the sisters of Don Nicomedes Claros, a famous priest in Higuera la Real.
CHAPEL OF JUAN DÍAZ "EL VIEJO" (1st Chapel on the right).
This is the chapel of the cleric Juan Diaz "El Viejo", built between 1619 and 1620 although it is known as the Chapel of Saint Lucia for this chapel Juan Diaz was obligated to meet the conditions established and to paint the image of "Santa Lucia".
You can see the images of Jesus resurrected, St. John the Baptist and the Immaculate Conception.
MAJOR CHAPEL
The main chapel was built in 1589, 16th century.
The altar, from the 17th century, has a baroque style and paintings by Jerónimo Ramírez that reflect the life and martyrdom of Santa Catalin, we also find a polychrome wooden image from the 19th century located in the central part of the altar.
PANEL PAINTINGS OF LUIS DE MORALES
On the side of the Epistle, there is one of the great artistic treasures of our village, the panel paintings of Luis de Morales, known by the nickname of "El Divino". The panel paintings is made up of six panels that were painted during the painter's mature period, between 1565 and 1566, commissioned by the cleric Ginés Martínez. They reflect the theme of the Passion under a clear mannerist style: St. John the Evangelist, Piety, Mary Magdalene, Christ tied to the column, Ecce Homo and Christ with the Cross on his back.
