DESCRIPTION

The so-called “Mill” is an old construction located in the rural surroundings of Tamurejo, forming part of the town’s historical and ethnographic heritage. It is situated within a natural landscape characteristic of La Siberia in Extremadura, close to other places of interest such as the “Pinguta del Morro” and the “Peña del Águila”.

It is a feature integrated into the landscape, helping to define the traditional character of the municipality and its close relationship with the natural environment.

HISTORY

The mill is located next to the bridge over the Río Agudo and was traditionally used for grinding grain, an activity essential to the rural economy of the area for centuries. Like many constructions of this type, its function was directly linked to the self-sufficiency of the population and the use of the surrounding agricultural resources.

Today it is preserved as a vestige of that past, leading to plans for its restoration through an institutional initiative aimed at enhancing it as a recreational and tourist space. An agreement was ultimately signed between the Junta de Extremadura, the Provincial Council of Badajoz, and the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation to rebuild it and adapt it as a leisure and recreational area. Following its reconstruction, it now operates as the Tamurejo Water and Literature Interpretation Centre.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

Old bridge over the Río Agudo. The bridge has three double-ring brick arches distributed in two sections over the river rock. The first section, with two arches, features a cutwater between the arches, while the third arch is separated from the others by rock from the riverbed.

Both the cutwater and the rest of the structure are built with slate stone masonry. The bridge is located on the route known as the Camino del Noque and was intended to provide access to the mill located about 100 metres from the bridge.

It is a functional construction linked to rural popular architecture. Although it does not correspond to defined artistic styles, its value lies in its traditional typology and adaptation to the surroundings.

The mill displays the characteristic features of these types of buildings: simple construction, the use of local materials, and a layout designed for practical use. It has now been restored and preserves its structure as a testimony to its original function.

INTANGIBLE HERITAGE

The mill represents an essential part of the collective memory of Tamurejo, linked to traditional ways of life based on agriculture and self-sufficiency.

Likewise, its presence in the landscape forms part of the routes and experiences linked to the municipality’s natural environment, integrating into the cultural perception of the territory alongside other sites such as the “Pinguta del Morro” and the “Peña del Águila”.
