DESCRIPTION
The remains of the Valdecaballeros Nuclear Power Plant constitute one of the municipality’s most singular sites due to their historical, industrial, and landscape significance. It is an unfinished energy project whose large concrete structures remain as testimony to a decisive stage in the recent history of the locality.
The complex, located in the rural surroundings of Valdecaballeros, still preserves part of the buildings and infrastructures linked to a facility that never came into operation.
HISTORY
The project began in 1975 and was planned to include two nuclear reactors, Valdecaballeros I and Valdecaballeros II, promoted by a company jointly owned by Sevillana de Electricidad and Hidroeléctrica Española.
During its construction, more than 4.000 people worked at the site, generating a strong economic and social impact on the locality, with the emergence of services, accommodations, and hospitality activities linked to the workers.
In 1984, the nuclear moratorium halted the works when both units were already highly advanced, especially Unit One, although neither ever entered into service. Subsequently, divestment and dismantling works were carried out, completed in 2001.
HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION
The complex does not respond to traditional artistic values, but rather to large-scale industrial architecture. Its image is dominated by the large concrete structures intended to house the reactors, accompanied by remains of guard posts, warehouses, internal roads, and other auxiliary facilities.
The power plant was conceived as a large-scale technical complex, with separate buildings for the reactors, support facilities, and electrical substations. Although much of the equipment was removed or dismantled, the main structures remain as visual landmarks in the landscape.
Its heritage value lies in its condition as a material testimony to the history of Spanish energy production in the 20th century and to the transformations that this project caused in Valdecaballeros.
RELEVANT FIGURES RELATED TO THE POI
No individual figures directly linked to the site are documented, although its history is associated with the companies promoting the project and with the institutional decisions that led to the halt of the works.
MOVABLE HERITAGE
No movable assets of special relevance associated with the project have been preserved, since most of the machinery, technical equipment, and interior elements were removed during the dismantling process.
However, the electrical substation linked to the site remains, currently used to distribute energy produced by nearby thermosolar and photovoltaic installations.
INTANGIBLE HERITAGE
The remains of the power plant form part of the contemporary memory of Valdecaballeros. Its construction represented a profound economic, social, and demographic transformation for the municipality, while its cancellation left a lasting mark on the population.
Today, the site preserves a strong symbolic value as a reminder of a project that marked the landscape and recent history of the locality, becoming one of the most singular examples of unfinished industrial heritage in Extremadura.
