DESCRIPTION

Popular hermitage dedicated to San Antonio Abad, known as San Antón, integrated into the religious heritage of Puebla de Alcocer and linked to the municipality’s festive traditions.

HISTORY

There is no precise information regarding the construction of the Hermitage of San Antón. It features a Gothic-Mudéjar window that appears to predate the 18th century. Its construction may be placed within the context of the development of small religious buildings linked to popular devotion in rural areas. For a long period, this building also served as the chapel of the town’s former cemetery, reinforcing its role within the religious and social life of the municipality.

Its location and use are closely related to the historical evolution of the urban centre, established on the hillside beneath the protection of the medieval castle. Over time, the hermitage has maintained its connection with traditional celebrations, especially the feast of San Antón, which continues to form part of the local festive calendar.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

The building follows a simple typology characteristic of popular religious architecture, with a single nave built in masonry. The roof is resolved through a barrel vault with lunettes in the chancel area, a solution characteristic of rural Baroque architecture.

The façade presents a sober composition, highlighting the presence of semicircular arched entrances, consistent with the functional character of the building. Overall, the hermitage combines constructive simplicity and adaptation to its surroundings, becoming a representative example of local religious architecture.
