DESCRIPTION

The Hermitage of San Isidro is a small religious temple located on the outskirts of the town of Risco, in the comarca of La Siberia. Situated in the area known as “El Mato”, it is integrated into a natural environment characteristic of the region, marked by open spaces traditionally linked to agricultural and livestock activities.

It is an enclave of both functional and festive character, closely linked to the municipality’s popular celebrations.

HISTORY

The hermitage is of recent construction, dating from around the 1990s, which makes it one of the most modern religious buildings in the locality.
Its creation responded to the need to provide the community with a specific space for celebrating the feast of San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of farmers and livestock breeders, deeply rooted in the rural environment.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

The building features a simple and functional architecture, in keeping with its contemporary character and its use linked to outdoor celebrations.
It lacks notable ornamental elements, with constructive sobriety and adaptation to the natural environment in which it is located prevailing. Its value lies more in its social and cultural function than in its architectural uniqueness.

RELEVANT FIGURES RELATED TO THE POI

No individual figures associated with the construction of the temple are documented, as it was an initiative linked to the local community as a whole.

MOVABLE HERITAGE

The hermitage houses the image of San Isidro Labrador, used during the celebrations and processions held in his honour.

INTANGIBLE HERITAGE

The hermitage is the centre of the San Isidro festivity, celebrated on 15 May, one of the locality’s most representative traditions.

During this day, a pilgrimage takes place in which the image of the saint is carried in procession to the hermitage, where a mass and various festive activities are held.

This celebration brings together residents and visitors in an atmosphere of coexistence, strengthening community ties and keeping alive traditions linked to the rural world, especially those related to agriculture and livestock farming.
