DESCRIPTION
The Punto Mira Viewpoint constitutes one of the new tourist and landscape resources incorporated into the natural surroundings of Puebla de Alcocer. Located in an elevated position overlooking the territories of La Siberia and La Serena, this panoramic viewpoint allows visitors to contemplate some of the widest and most representative landscapes of inland Extremadura.
The enclave offers direct views towards the La Serena reservoir, the Orellana reservoir, the Castle of Puebla de Alcocer and a large part of the mountainous and dehesa landscape that structures the territories of La Siberia and La Serena.
The infrastructure was officially inaugurated on 1 April 2026 and was conceived as a public observation space integrated into an environment of high environmental value, within a territory declared a Biosphere Reserve and Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
Access to the viewpoint can be made on foot from Puebla de Alcocer by means of an approximate 30-minute route following the traditional path leading to the geodesic point known as “Rachado”.
HISTORY AND CREATION OF THE VIEWPOINT
The creation of the Punto Mira Viewpoint responds to a strategy aimed at enhancing the landscape and natural heritage surrounding Puebla de Alcocer.
The project was carried out during 2025 and the beginning of 2026, culminating in its official inauguration on 1 April 2026. The intervention was financed through grants intended for the improvement of management, dissemination and public-use infrastructures in protected areas, with an investment exceeding 85,000 euros.
The intervention aimed to organise and concentrate public use in a safe and controlled point, avoiding dispersed impacts on the terrain, vegetation and local fauna. To achieve this, a comprehensive intervention was developed, including the adaptation of the access route through selective manual clearing and vegetation removal, accessibility improvements, installation of signage and information panels, as well as the construction of elevated walkways and the panoramic viewpoint itself.
Complementarily, the so-called “Punto Mira Route” was created, a circular itinerary beginning and ending at Plaza Cervantes in Puebla de Alcocer, partially coinciding with the old route ascending to the geodesic point of Rachado.
HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC AND LANDSCAPE DESCRIPTION
The Punto Mira Viewpoint consists of a contemporary structure formed by three cantilevered walkways integrated into the terrain and opened towards different sectors of the landscape. The platform has been designed to offer a 360-degree panoramic view over the surrounding territory, allowing the observation of extensive dehesa landscapes, mountain ranges, reservoirs and historic settlements.
From the viewpoint it is possible to contemplate the La Serena reservoir, the Orellana reservoir, the Castle of Puebla de Alcocer, the Guadiana basin and much of the transitional landscape between La Siberia and La Serena.
On days of good visibility, it is possible to see territories belonging to the provinces of Badajoz, Cáceres, Ciudad Real, Toledo and Córdoba, corresponding to the autonomous communities of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalucía. Furthermore, it is the only viewpoint in Spain from which three autonomous communities can be simultaneously observed.
The intervention was developed seeking visual and environmental integration with the natural surroundings, minimising the impact on the landscape and favouring the orderly contemplation of the territory.
NATURAL SURROUNDINGS
The viewpoint is located within an area of high ecological value included in the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve and within a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
The surroundings combine dehesa areas, quartzite mountain ranges, bodies of water and Mediterranean habitats of great environmental interest. The elevated position of the enclave allows visitors to understand the territorial and landscape dimension of one of the largest and least transformed natural spaces in inland Iberia.
The existence of large reservoirs, ecological corridors and Mediterranean woodland areas also favours the presence of numerous species of birds and wildlife characteristic of the region.
TOURISTIC AND TERRITORIAL VALUE
The Punto Mira Viewpoint has become established as a new observation and public-use point aimed at landscape interpretation and the sustainable tourism development of Puebla de Alcocer and its surroundings.
The infrastructure allows visitors to gain a broad understanding of the territory, facilitating the visual comprehension of highly relevant natural, historical and geographical elements, including the reservoir system, the mountain ranges of La Siberia and the dominant presence of the Castle of Puebla de Alcocer over the landscape.
The creation of the viewpoint and the Punto Mira Route also contributes to diversifying the municipality’s tourist offer through resources linked to hiking, landscape observation and the responsible enjoyment of the natural environment.
