The Alange Thermal Baths are located in the municipality of the same name in the province of Badajoz, some 18 km from Mérida. The thermal complex that we have reference to dates back to Roman times in the 3rd century, known at that time as Aquae, becoming from the beginning a health and recreation centre. The exact date of its construction is not known, but the findings document its existence in the 3rd century AD, so it already existed in the time of Trajan and Hadrian.

The village is situated on a small hill, near the reservoir, in the vicinity of the Sierra de Peñas Blancas. It is made up of three rivers: the Matachel, the Palomillas and the Valdemedel, which provide its waters.

We know from the inscriptions found that Licinius Serenianus, who donated an altar in honour of Iuno Regina, as a result of the cure of his daughter Varinia Serena, made use of its waters. This altar can be seen on the walls of the courtyard.

Since ancient times Alange has been visited for the curative qualities of its medicinal waters, which have a high radon content and improve nervous disorders, arthrosis, rheumatism and some respiratory problems, but the origin of the spa, as we have said, is Roman.
