DESCRIPTION

The Town Hall of Herrera del Duque constitutes the main administrative and institutional building of the locality and one of the public spaces most representative of the municipality’s social and political life. Its historical evolution reflects the various urban transformations experienced by Herrera del Duque over the centuries, as well as the functional and administrative changes developed around municipal government.

Although the current town hall building belongs to a contemporary period, the municipal institution has a long historical trajectory linked to different buildings located within the urban center. The current headquarters stands on the site formerly occupied by the Don Bernardo Romano school group, one of the best-known educational spaces in the locality during much of the 20th century.

Today, the Town Hall maintains a central role within the administrative, cultural, and social organization of Herrera del Duque and also constitutes one of the municipality’s principal urban landmarks.

HISTORY

The history of the Town Hall of Herrera del Duque is closely linked to the evolution of the historic urban center itself and to the institutional transformations developed over the centuries.
Historical references and local memory indicate that the first municipal headquarters was originally located beneath the arcades of the upper square of the locality. It remained there for centuries, constituting the principal administrative and municipal meeting space during the earliest historical periods of Herrera del Duque.

The choice of the square as the location for the town council headquarters responded to a traditional urban organization widespread in numerous towns of Extremadura, where arcades and main squares concentrated the administrative, commercial, and social functions of the population.
Subsequently, the Town Hall was moved to another building located on one of the streets of the historic center. This second municipal headquarters remained in operation until after the Spanish Civil War, when new administrative and urban planning needs for the locality began to emerge.

Finally, during the 1980s, the Town Hall was moved to its current location, built on the land previously occupied by the Don Bernardo Romano school group. This former educational center was part of the daily and educational life of numerous generations of residents of Herrera del Duque for decades.
The change of location made it possible to provide the municipality with larger administrative facilities adapted to the contemporary needs of local administration.
