IDENTIFICATION AND LOCATION

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is located on the outskirts of the urban centre of Tamurejo, in an area adapted as a space for recreation and community gathering. It constitutes one of the town’s main religious and festive spaces, especially linked to the celebrations dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario.

HISTORY

The hermitage is a modern construction built in 1991 thanks to the initiative and collaboration of local residents. Its construction responded to the wish of many inhabitants of Tamurejo to provide the town with a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario.

The funds for its construction were obtained mainly through popular contributions from the town’s inhabitants, who also actively participated in both the design and construction of the building, under the direction of Castillo Gallego.

Shortly after the completion of the hermitage, the Town Council of Tamurejo adapted a recreational area in its surroundings, creating a space intended both for community gatherings and for welcoming visitors and pilgrims.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

The hermitage follows a style of contemporary popular religious architecture inspired by traditional Extremaduran models. The building features a simple and balanced composition, with a whitewashed façade and Arab tile roof.

Its most characteristic feature is the large front portico supported by arches, extending along much of the main façade and the sides, creating a covered transitional space between the exterior and the church.

At the central axis rises a simple bell gable topped with a metal cross, beneath which there is a decorative ceramic panel dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario.

The interior consists of a single nave covered with an exposed wooden structure and austere decoration, dominated by the main altar and the image of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The layout of the building also follows a simple and functional scheme, in keeping with the popular and devotional character of the sanctuary.

INTANGIBLE HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS

The hermitage constitutes one of the main centres of popular devotion in Tamurejo. Pilgrimages and religious events dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario are held around it, especially during the month of October.

These celebrations contribute to the maintenance and preservation of the sanctuary and form a prominent part of the town’s social and festive life.

Likewise, every 15 August a procession takes place around the hermitage, keeping alive the religious tradition linked to this space.

SETTING AND CURRENT USE

The complex is integrated into an area adapted for leisure and community gatherings, commonly used during religious celebrations, neighbourhood meetings, and festive activities.

The hermitage has become one of the symbolic and representative spaces of Tamurejo, both from a religious and social perspective.
