DESCRIPTION

The fountain known as “El Chorro Viejo” is one of the most distinctive elements of the historic centre of Villarta de los Montes. Located near the Parish Church of Santa María Magdalena, it constitutes a small yet significant site closely linked to the daily life of the town.
It is a natural spring flowing from the nearby mountains, being the only fountain of this kind within the urban area of the municipality.

HISTORY

For generations, this fountain has been used by the inhabitants of Villarta de los Montes as a water supply point. In times when modern supply systems did not exist, local residents came to this place to fill water jugs and pitchers, integrating the fountain into their daily routines.
Its continuous use over time has made it an element deeply rooted in the collective memory of the town.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

From a constructional point of view, the fountain follows a simple design, characteristic of traditional rural fountains. Its value lies not so much in elaborate architecture as in its functional character and its integration with the natural environment from which the water emerges.
The spring flows directly from the nearby mountains, creating a humble yet highly authentic setting.

It does not contain movable elements of particular relevance, beyond the traditional components associated with its use as a public fountain.

INTANGIBLE HERITAGE

“El Chorro Viejo” represents a clear example of intangible heritage linked to traditional ways of life. The act of going to the fountain to collect water forms part of customs passed down from generation to generation.
