Religious building

DESCRIPTION

Religious building located in Plaza de la Constitución in Garbayuela, known as the Parish Church of San Pedro Apóstol. It is a 16th-century construction built in stone and considered the town’s main architectural and religious landmark.

The temple, of medium proportions, features a quadrangular tower integrated into the façade and an interior greatly transformed from its original configuration due to the successive renovations carried out throughout its history.

The church has been declared a Historical-Artistic Monument of Singular and Popular Architecture.

HISTORY

The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol was built in the 16th century. According to local tradition, the construction of the temple was related to the discovery of America, and it is said that some elements such as the wooden ceilings, as well as sacred vessels and liturgical garments, were brought from the Indies.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone various renovations and transformations that altered part of its original appearance, especially in the interior of the temple. The church has maintained its function as the main religious and devotional space of Garbayuela.

HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

The temple corresponds to a stone construction organised around a main nave divided into four sections by pointed arches supporting a wooden roof. At the foot of the church there is a choir loft raised over a triple arcade.

The chancel is structured into several sections defined by semicircular arches, ending in a flat wall at the main altar. Externally, the quadrangular tower integrated into the façade stands out. The main entrance features a simple arch, while another secondary door opens on the Epistle side.

Decorative details of Mudéjar tradition executed in brick can be appreciated in different exterior elements.

The interior of the temple appears greatly transformed compared to its original appearance. Among its main elements stands out the recently restored Baroque main altarpiece, with images of San Juan, San Pedro and San José. A Gothic articulated Christ dating from the 16th century is also preserved, as well as small sculptures of San Sebastián and Santa Ana, likewise datable to the 16th century and originating from former hermitages outside the town walls that have now disappeared.

FIGURES AND ENTITIES RELATED TO THE POI

The temple is linked to the devotion of San Pedro Apóstol, titular saint of the parish and a principal figure in Christian tradition.

The church is also related to the former disappeared hermitages around Garbayuela, from which some of the images currently preserved inside the temple originate.

MOVABLE HERITAGE

Among the preserved movable assets, the recently restored Baroque main altarpiece stands out, presided over by images of San Juan, San Pedro and San José.

A 16th-century Gothic articulated Christ is also preserved, together with small sculptures of San Sebastián and Santa Ana, originating from former disappeared hermitages and likewise datable to the 16th century.

INTANGIBLE HERITAGE
