DESCRIPTION
Las Hoces del Guadiana constitute one of the most impressive and emblematic natural landscapes of Villarta de los Montes. It is an enclave where the Guadiana River cuts forcefully between large quartzite cliffs that rise abruptly from the riverbed, creating a landscape of great visual intensity and extraordinary ecological and scenic value.
HISTORY
This group of gorges, narrows, and ravines has been shaped by the action of the river over thousands of years along the natural boundary between the present-day provinces of Badajoz and Ciudad Real. In some areas, the cliffs reach heights close to 200 meters above the riverbed, forming one of the most spectacular and singular landscapes of the Siberia Extremeña.
The site is located between the municipalities of Villarta de los Montes and Puebla de Don Rodrigo, preserving an almost untouched environment where riverside ecosystems, Mediterranean woodland, and large rocky formations converge. This combination of habitats creates a space of great biological richness and notable interest for observing fauna and flora.
The site has traditionally been a place of gathering and enjoyment for the inhabitants of Villarta de los Montes, who have maintained a constant relationship with this environment over time.
There are various access routes and hiking trails that allow visitors to contemplate the landscape from different panoramic viewpoints. Some routes run alongside the riverbed, facilitating direct contact with the river and wildlife observation, while others cross elevated areas of the Sierra de la Umbría, offering wide views over the Guadiana Valley and the bordering territories of the province of Ciudad Real.
The routes and paths crossing the area have served both for transit and for the use of natural resources, maintaining its almost untouched character up to the present day.
HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION
Las Hoces del Guadiana are configured as a spectacular system of canyons and river gorges extending for more than six kilometers, where the river advances in a zigzag pattern through successive mountain formations.
The landscape is characterized by the presence of imposing quartzite cliffs rising vertically from the water, creating an environment of enormous visual strength and great geological value. In some sections, the river forms narrows and calm pools that contrast with the verticality of the rocky walls, creating one of the region’s most representative natural settings.
The environmental richness of the enclave favors the presence of numerous plant and animal species associated with both Mediterranean woodland and river ecosystems. Riverside vegetation includes ash trees, alders, reeds, and other species typical of humid environments, while the slopes preserve holm oaks and mountain vegetation adapted to the quartzite substrate.

The surroundings also include a recreational and bathing area known as the Estrecho de las Hoces del Guadiana, equipped with picnic areas and resting spaces, highly frequented during the summer months.
The natural characteristics of the enclave also favor outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, nature observation, and climbing in certain sectors of the gorge.
Las Hoces del Guadiana are presented as a true natural refuge for numerous species in an area of great environmental value, where the contrast between water, rock, and vegetation creates a landscape of great beauty.
The images show how the river winds between the rocks, drawing an exceptional landscape with enclosed bends, calm water pools, and quartzite walls rising beside the riverbed. The photographs display some of the most representative corners of the site hidden within Las Hoces del Guadiana in Villarta de los Montes and allow one to sense the grandeur of the scenery discovered by visitors entering this unique enclave.
