DESCRIPTION
The rock paintings of Garbayuela constitute one of the oldest testimonies of human occupation in the territory of La Siberia extremeña, located in natural shelters situated within quartzite formations in the mountainous surroundings of the municipality.
This ensemble forms part of the extensive heritage of schematic rock art in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula, integrating into a network of similar sites located in nearby comarcas.
HISTORY
The paintings date from around 2500 BC, during the Bronze Age, a period in which human communities developed forms of symbolic expression linked to their social organisation and beliefs.
Their discovery took place during the 20th century within the framework of archaeological research carried out in the area, which enabled their identification as part of the schematic rock art ensemble characteristic of Extremadura.
HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION
The representations belong to the so-called schematic art, characterised by formal simplification and the use of symbolic signs.
Within the rock shelters, human figures, dots and other abstract elements have been documented, whose interpretation is associated with ritual, symbolic or communicative manifestations characteristic of prehistoric communities.
The choice of natural supports, such as protected surfaces within quartzite shelters, corresponds to common patterns in this type of manifestation, favouring their preservation over time.
