DESCRIPTION
Institutional building housing the Town Hall of Puebla de Alcocer, located in the central area of the urban centre and representative of the civil architecture linked to local administration.
HISTORY
The building of the town hall de Puebla de Alcocer forms part of the historical evolution of the town as the administrative and political centre of the former viscounty, a role that the village fulfilled for centuries as one of the most territorially significant centres of the region. Town halls have traditionally occupied a prominent place within the urban fabric, generally linked to the main square, serving as spaces for government, institutional representation and the organisation of public life.
The current building reflects this historical need to provide the municipality with a stable headquarters for local government, maintaining over time its role as the main administrative and social reference point for the population. The building has undergone various renovations and adaptations in line with the functional needs of each period, while nevertheless preserving its integration within the historic centre of Puebla de Alcocer.
On the main façade stand out the coats of arms linked to the Zúñiga and Sotomayor lineages, noble families closely related to the manorial history of the town and to the former Viscounty of Puebla de Alcocer. The presence of these heraldic emblems reinforces the representative and historical character of the building within the urban complex.
HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION
The Town Hall displays a typology characteristic of institutional civil architecture, with a symmetrically organised façade adapted to its representative function within the town’s main urban space. The construction combines traditional materials, such as masonry and finishes typical of the area’s popular architecture, with simple and functional building solutions. The main façade, opening onto the square, organises its openings through a balanced and sober composition, where formal clarity prevails over excessive ornamentation.
Among the most outstanding elements of the building are the heraldic coats of arms of the Zúñiga and Sotomayor lineages located on the façade, evidence of the historical connection of Puebla de Alcocer with these noble families and with the manorial organisation of the territory during the Early Modern Age. These elements provide the property with added symbolic value within the town’s urban heritage.
The complex is fully integrated into the central space of the municipality, helping to define the square as a place for meeting, institutional representation and everyday activity, maintaining its importance both for its administrative function and for its historical significance within the urban landscape of Puebla de Alcocer.
