DESCRIPTION

The Plaza Mayor of Helechosa de los Montes constitutes the main urban, administrative, and social space of the town. It contains the town hall building together with various traditional heritage elements that make up one of the municipality’s most representative urban ensembles.

The town hall is crowned by a bell, a characteristic element of traditional local civil architecture. In front of the building stands a fountain incorporating an ancient medieval rollo, currently integrated into the public space of the square.

The ensemble is completed by traditional houses that preserve sgraffito façades and various decorative paintings, contributing to reinforce the unique character of the urban setting. In this same space stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia, the town’s main parish church.

HISTORY

The Plaza Mayor has historically constituted the nerve center of Helechosa de los Montes, concentrating the municipality’s administrative, religious, and social functions.

The ancient rollo preserved beside the fountain constitutes one of the ensemble’s most notable historical elements, linked to the town’s jurisdictional past and to the traditional forms of administration and representation of local power during the medieval and modern periods.

The municipal building has maintained its institutional function as the seat of local government, forming together with the parish church and the traditional buildings the historical and representative core of Helechosa de los Montes.

HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION

The urban ensemble of the Plaza Mayor follows traditional models of popular architecture from the La Siberia region, combining civil and religious buildings with ornamental elements integrated into a compact space of great environmental value.

The Town Hall presents sober and functional architecture, with the bell and weather vane crowning the building standing out visually.

The fountain located in the square incorporates an ancient medieval rollo, reused and integrated as a heritage and ornamental element within the urban space. These types of rollos or pillories traditionally constituted symbols of jurisdiction and local autonomy.
The houses surrounding the square preserve sgraffito façades and popular decorative paintings that provide aesthetic uniqueness to the ensemble and reinforce the heritage value of the traditional urban core.
